5 surefire steps to finding an high paying niche
Want to know how to hire more in an overly saturated industry, make a big name for yourself and hire big millions?
But before we dive into the deep waters, what is a Niche and why is it so important?
I know well, this is not the first time you are hearing about Niche and niche-ing down, and it's always end with either it's good, you must or it's bad, you mustn't argument but I am not going to keep the score here...
Because I want to dive right into the 'hard' part ( I can swear that's why many 'experts' 'advised' you to not niche down_ because it's a whole lot of hard work)
But you have to trust me when I say Niche-ing down is your first step to your first $100,000 in freelance copywriting or any business at that, so what is a niche and why should you have one?
A niche is the topic or type of copy or content you focus on as a freelance copywriter.
Your niche should be an area that you have experience in (this is a rule!) because it's rather easier to learn more and write what you know than learn, learn more and write about what you don't know.
And also, it's easier to focus on one thing and excel at it (and get paid more doing it) than to be the Jack-of-all trade, master of none (with few cash to stash).
And it much sexier to tell people something like I am ' a content writer for ecommerce' or ' a white paper boy for real estates' or ' a case study girl for Digital courses', don't you think?
Yes, this would means less customers but trust me you don't need more customers, all you need are the 20% high-paying customers that pays you the 80% of your earnings.
Or am I wrong? I don't think so.

The benefits of having a niche
First of all, you have to know that you don't have to niche down to make money as a freelance copywriter or as any type of freelancing for that matter.
I repeat, you don’t need to niche down to make money.
But certainly, you have to niche down and get specific with your offers if you want get high paying gigs and increase your monthly income.
So yes, here are the three main reasons I strongly advice you to have a niche
1. You can build an authoritative reputation quickly and easily
Freelance copywriting, or any type of freelancing is all about Focus and maximum Productivity (Click here to read about Productivity; the art of working less and achieving more).
I need to say this, a generalist has no focus.
Just imagine this, you’re writing white papers for a beauty brand last week, then email sequences for a financial brand yesterday, and today you are working on a sales page for an health brand (that's kind of frustrating and distracting!)
Or are you planning on getting one job a month and spending 6 weeks on it?
You know as much as I do that you would have no time to build your authority... not talk of building your own tribe.
Perhaps, this is why no 'expert' wants you have a niche.
2. You can definitely, and always, charge more as an authority.
If you needed a brain surgery would you go to a specialist neurosurgeon or a general practitioner?
A specialist neurosurgeon, of course.
And of course, he would charge more than the general practitioner, you still want him to do his stuff.
You want to be THE specialist.
You want to earn more and build a massive authority, and you can only do that when you niche down.
3. You get better results faster.
What do you think is the hardest part of being a freelancer?
Getting clients!
And what is the easiest way of getting clients?
Knowing exactly where and who to approach to pitch your services.
Of course, you can go to Freelance Marketplaces and wait for a low paying, highly frustrating gig and get some cash.
But just for a moment, what if you have a niche and all you have to do is find companies and brands in that niche that need or/ and are already paying for services like yours and all you have to do is pitch to them?
Easier than ABC, right?
And you can also write highly relevant samples to send to these prospects... those kind of samples that get your prospects saying 'I want this writer, I need her to write something like this for my stuffs' and is that not what you want? Hungry Prospects that are eager to pay you for your services.
Now that you know what a niche is and the benefits of having a niche, let's talk about how you can actually and certainly get yourself a high-paying niche that you have experience in and kind of passionate about.
Yes, kind of because if the niche you are passionate about is not high-paying, then you are doing yourself a disservice.
So, it's better to find a niche that's high-paying, that you are experience in than to find a low paying niche that you are passionate about...
Because if you love it and it's low paying you are going to hate doing a thing about it and when you don't do anything about it, you don't learn or grow (That's as good as not being a freelancer in the first place).
But really, how do you find an high paying niche for yourself?
From all I have said so far and all you have been through 'trying to find your niche', you also, now, know that inspiration, or 'waiting for it', would not get you an high paying niche so what does?
Here are my 5 sure-fire steps to finding an high paying niche.
1. Your Experiences
List 10 industries you know about, industries you know for sure.
Look back into your past, both professional and personal memories, and create a list of at least 10 areas you have experience in.
If you don't know how to go about this, ask yourself these 5 questions:
- What am I educated in?
- What do I enjoy learning about?
- What have I covered in my work history?
- What topics do my friends ask my opinion on?
- What hobbies did I have for a long time and always enjoy doing?
Once you have make a list out of all the questions above, the next thing is...
2. Your Passion and Interest
Make a list of what you want to write about
You just have to list 10 areas you would like to write about.
Be flexible here and know that nothing is ridiculous, list every and any area you wish to write about.
It's can be weight loss pills (yes, you also know lots of brands that are into this).
Now you have your Experience list and your Interest list, it's time to...
3. Compare the Lists
Put your two lists next to each other and look for anywhere they sync together.
Sync together as in two things that work together significantly well and have a little bit of compatibility.
For example, if on your Experience list you could have Natural herbs and supplements and you have Health on your Interest list, then can write for Natural Health or Natural Supplements brands.
Doing something like the above, find where items on both lists work in harmony and list them all out
Now that you have your Sync list, you have to...
4. Find out if there is a market for them
If you find any idea on your list that does not have an actual market, you just cross it out and let it go (it can only give you low paying gigs and stress anyways)
Keep cross the items out until you have three solid high-paying niches you can settle for.
Now is the time to...
5. Search and test the strength of the three niches
You can either head to Google or LinkedIn.
If you are heading to Google...
Look for posts that give tips or advices on how to become a freelance copywriter in that niche
Search for other freelance copywriters within that niche
Notice the kind of advice been asked or shared within the niche.
And know what businesses ( and hiring managers) hire copywriters to write in that niche.
These would guide you and solidify your final decision.
And for LinkedIn...
Check if there is a lot of freelance copywriter in that niche?
Also note if there are any advertised jobs from reputable brands?
And know what copywriters are getting paid to write in that niche
When you are done with your research, you can get down to comparing and analysing each of the 3 niches to make a choice.
